In a recent board meeting, June 2025, the business continued discussions exploring ways we can continue to reduce our carbon footprint – that of our supply chain – as well as alignment to customers and markets that are committed to the future of carbon reduction.
Carbon Efficiency
Environmental, Social, and Governance
ISO
As a result we plan to develop clear milestones we will focus on in order to measure our ESG responsibilities. We will further continue to review our supply chain to look at green credentials, as well as social responsibility, including monitoring their positions on modern slavery.
Solar Array
Since 2015 High Peak Steels have utilised the power of the sun to reduce the amount of energy the business takes off the grid. Such is the power generated we are able to generate a surplus and put this back into the grid.
As a business that has a reasonably high demand for energy it is rewarding to know that the investment, early on, in renewables is not only befitting us in reduced energy bills, but importantly we are utilising less carbon emitting energy from the national infrastructure.
The system provides power for heating, lighting, our computer system and even heavy machinery.
Vehicle Fleet
Having our own fleet of wagons to deliver steel stock is central to our business operation and customer service performance capability.Â
In 2024 we looked at the possibility of going electric with our wagons. It was soon apparent that at present the range and weight of engineering steel stock, for deliveries, were not viable at this stage, as a commercial alternative to diesel. For now we have made the decision therefore to look to significantly more efficient diesel engines.
The Scania P280 Rigid Drop Side wagons provided the best solution, replacing some older less efficient vehicles, High Peak steels replaced and added to our fleet; now totalling 11 wagons. These will be more economical, both in fuel terms due to the engines low revving capabilities, producing 775 lb-ft (1050 Newton) at 1000 to 1 500 rpm.
Reliability so fewer replacement parts and an increased life expectancy, both for us and in the future a second hand owner; something often forgotten considering the amount of energy and material that goes into manufacturing a vehicle.

Steel Production
The argument about the energy consumption to produce steel, due to the requisite temperatures required to produce a bar of steel will continue. Often it is forgotten that steel is an infinitely renewable material.
So whilst there is no escaping the fact mining and production are inevitably carbon emitters, once the steel is produced it can be recycled. At this time green innovations in metallurgical materials recycling is scaling at an ever increasing rate.
From Electric Arc furnaces (EAF’s) as well as hydrogen-based technology called direct reduced iron (DRI) reducing the heat at which steel can be produced, to downstream recycling of metals, including the extraction of some of the rare metals needed for the green transition.
At the same time the demand for steel is on the rise. In the UK alone the UK Government predicts there will be a demand for 25 million tonnes of steel by 2050; for offshore wind farms and housing + other infrastructure projects.
Supply Chain
Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is emerging and the UK are participating in this for imports of various goods including steel and aluminium. The aims are to avoid carbon leakage, so embedding greenhouses gasses in production – something High Peak Steels continue to work on, with their supply chain. As a business we have a continual programme of evaluating our supply chain as part of our own due diligence and the demands by our customers for ethically sourced materials grows.
This demand reaches beyond simply the need for green steel and reaches into Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG). The environmental, social and ethics requirements of supply chain is now at the forefront for business and High Peak Steels are focused on these values being part of our business day to day, as we strive to be…
Stronger together - how we operate with our stakeholders
- An employer of choice – as evidenced in the long standing team we employ.Â
- Committed to customer service – evidenced by our 98% on-time and in full delivery standards + many customers loyal for decades, for which we are both grateful and proud.
- Supplier relationships – we strive to treat our supply chain as we would wish to be treated. From wagon deliveries, to professional services providers and of course our steel producers. Many of these have collaborated with us for decades. New suppliers are given the same respect as we grow relationships with them too.
