EN19 (709M40T)

Alloy steel

EN19 | 709M40T | 42CrMo4 Engineering steel

EN19 | 709M40T | 42CrMo4 is a high quality alloy steel with tensile strength ideal for load bearing.

With a combination of good ductility and shock resistance, EN19 steel is suitable for applications with very high loading such as engine gear boxes. Popular in the automotive sector it is possible to machine the material extremely accurately, in recent years EN19 has become an established material in the Oil & Gas sector. The material lends itself well to any application where strength is a primary consideration.

EN19 (709M40T) is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel offering significantly higher strength, toughness and fatigue resistance than carbon steels such as EN9. Supplied in black flat bar, EN19 is widely used for precision engineering applications where performance under load is critical.

EN19 is a high tensile steel with good ductility and shock resistance. The alloy offers good wear resistance too and can be case hardened. It is a high quality alloy engineering steel.

It is commonly supplied in the T condition (hardened and tempered) for immediate use in demanding applications.

Key properties of EN19

  • High tensile strength (850–1000 N/mm² typical)
  • Excellent toughness and fatigue resistance
  • Good wear resistance
  • Consistent performance under load

Milling benefits for EN19 flat bar

Milling enhances EN19’s usability in machining environments. This is especially valuable for CNC and high-volume machining operations.

  • Improved dimensional accuracy
  • Better surface condition for tooling
  • Reduced setup variation
  • Increased repeatability across batches

Steel stock range

High Peak Steels stock EN19 / 42CrMo4 steel in black round, square and flat bar and bright round bar.

What is EN19 steel used for?

EN19 is used for high-strength engineering components such as shafts, gears and fasteners that require toughness and fatigue resistance.

Is EN19 better than EN9?

EN19 offers higher strength and durability than EN9, making it more suitable for demanding applications.

What does “T condition” mean in EN19?

The “T” condition means the steel is supplied hardened and tempered, providing improved strength and performance.
